Eyes 8.0

'Surprised Eyes'

Produced in July 2020

It's-a me, Romy! I wanted to try out some eyes on the grey-toned Strathmore paper that I talked about a couple of posts ago. This photograph makes me laugh as it's the real-life version of the eye emoji 👀. I like this paper because it's really easy to make lighter areas, such as the eyeball and light reflections, stand out, which makes the piece that bit more realistic. Also, with the paper already being grey, and having a base colour to work on top of, this drawing only took about a week to complete, which is much faster than other similar drawings that I've done (they can sometimes take 2-3 weeks)! However, I found it difficult to get the balance right between the dark graphite pencil and white pencil, but hopefully, it will become easier with more practice.

I decided to recreate a section of the piece below, which I produced as part of my A-level art coursework. I've always been interested in realism and hyperrealism, genres of art that took off in the 60s and 70s, simply because of how much detail artists put into their work, and it's something I try to implement in my own work.

Produced in 2015 or 2016

I will continue to use the grey-toned paper and provide further updates!
